On 20 January 1989, the Samsunspor team was involved in a traffic accident in Havza on the way to a match in Malatya by bus, killing the team coach, three players and the bus driver instantly. Samsunspor could not achieve the desired momentum after that day, most of the players left football after the accident. In the second half, Samsunspor, which was deemed to be defeated 3-0 by default, remained in the league with a special decision.
In recent years, Samsunspor has struggled to maintain its place in the top divisions of Turkish football and has faced financial difficulties. However, the club has a dedicated and passionate fan base and continues to play a significant role in the local community.
